مواد مختلف، بسته به آرایش الکترونی و شرایط محیطی دیگر، طیف مختلفی از امواج الکترومغناطیسی یا نور را جذب یا گسیل می کنند و از این رو، دستگاه اسپکترومتر که برای آنالیز آنها به کار می روند، بسته به کاربرد و مواد مورد آنالیز معمولاً با محدوده طیف الکترومغناطیسی که می توانند آنالیز انجام دهند، تعریف می شوند.

همچنین این نوع از دستگاه اسپکترومتر، می توانند بر اساس طراحی اپتیکی مکانیکی آنها و کاربرد مورد نظر یا ویژگی های خاصی که ارائه می دهند نیز متمایز شوند. یکی از این دسته بندی ها بر اساس تعداد مسیر نوری است که به دو دسته زیر تقسیم می شوند:
در اسپکترومتر نوری نوع تک پرتو، نور ورودی از منبع، تنها یک مسیر مستقیم را تا آشکارساز طی می کند و بنابراین در این نوع سیستم، نور از شدت خوبی برخوردار است.
در اسپکترومتر نوع دو پرتو، نور پیش از اینکه با ماده مورد آنالیز برهمکنشی داشته باشد، به دو پرتو مجزا تقسیم می شود و یکی از پرتو ها از ماده نمونه عبور کرده و سپس به آشکارساز می رسد. اما پرتو دوم، بدون هیچگونه برهمکنشی آشکارسازی می شود تا شدت نور کنترل گردد.
اسپکترومتر نوری در بسیاری از حوزه ها، از جمله در تحقیقات و بخش های تولید جهت اندازهگیری رنگ، آنالیز شیمیایی و کنترل کیفیت، آزمایش های دارویی، چک آپ پزشکی، مشاهده رشد گیاهان، آزمایش دستگاه های ساطع کننده نور، کنترل مواد غذایی و نوشیدنی ها، اندازهگیری میزان آلودگی، درجه بندی محصولات و غیره به کار می روند.
و در حال حاضر نیز دستگاه اسپکترومتر به طور فزاینده ای در مراحل کنترل فرآیند، به عنوان مثال در صنایع نفت و پتروشیمی، آب و فاضلاب، کارخانجات رنگرزی، کارخانه های شیمیایی، صنایع نیمه هادی و فرآیند های آبکاری الکتریکی، جهت آنالیز در زمان واقعی و در محل فرایند مورد استفاده قرار می گیرند.

با تغییر در اندازه میدان مغناطیسی، یون هایی با نسبت جرم به بار متفاوت، به سمت سیستم آشکارساز منحرف می شوند و باری متناسب با تعداد یون ها تولید می کنند. با داشتن طیف حاصل، می توان از آن برای تعیین فراوانی نسبی ایزوتوپ های یک اتم، شناسایی ترکیبات شیمیایی یا استنتاج ساختار یک مولکول یا اتم خاص استفاده کرد.
دستگاه اسپکترومتر جرمی در عین اینکه تنها به مقادیر بسیاری کمی از نمونه (در حد نانو مول) برای آنالیز نیاز دارند، کاربرد های وسیعی برای شناسایی، تعیین خصوصیات، تأیید و تعیین کمیت مولکول ها و اتم های کوچک تا بزرگ دارند.

طیف سنج رزونانس مغناطیسی هسته ای، یکی دیگر از از انواع دستگاه اسپکترومتر است که عمدتاً در شیمی آلی و بیوشیمی، برای به دست آوردن اطلاعات در مورد ساختار و ترکیب مولکول ها و اتم ها استفاده می شود.

مفهوم فیزیکی و اساسی طیف سنجی NMR این است که هسته ها بار الکتریکی مثبت دارند و همانند الکترون های یک اتم و مولکول، دارای اسپین هستند.
طبق این شرایط است که میدان مغناطیسی خارجی، با تحریک این اسپین ها امکان ایجاد گذار انرژی را فراهم می کند.
با هدایت طیف وسیعی از فرکانس های امواج رادیویی به نمونه، هسته ها در فرکانس های مختلفی انرژی جذب کرده و گذار انرژی به صورت تشدیدی اتفاق می افتد.
به طور کلی، این گذار یا تغییر انرژی از سطوح انرژی پایین تر به بالاتر، معمولاً در یک مرحله مستقیم و سریع انجام می شود.
فرکانس رادیویی تشدید که برای جذب انرژی در هسته ها ضروری است، به دو عامل مهم و اساسی بستگی دارد (که مشخصه های نوع هسته هستند):

از بین دسته های مختلف دستگاه اسپکترومتر، طیف سنج الکترونی به گروهی از تکنیک ها اطلاق می شود که برای مطالعه خواص و رفتار الکترون ها استفاده می شوند و مبتنی بر آنالیز انرژی جنبشی یا تکانه الکترونهای ساطع شده از ماده هستند.
در این نوع دستگاه اسپکترومتر، بسته به تکنیک و طراحی سیستمی، تابش ذرات پرانرژی مانند فوتون های اشعه ایکس، الکترون های پرتو الکترونی یا فوتون های تابش فرابنفش به ماده نمونه، باعث گسیل شدن الکترون ها و فوتوالکترون های اوژه می شود.
این تکنیک ها، برای شناسایی و تعیین عناصر و ساختار های الکترونی سطح نمونه های آزمایشی استفاده می شوند که نمونه ها می توانند جامد، گاز یا مایع باشند. اطلاعات شیمیایی فقط از بالاترین لایه های اتمی نمونه (عمق 10 نانومتر یا کمتر) به دست می آید، زیرا انرژی الکترون های اوژه و فوتو الکترون ها بسیار کم است (eV 20-2000) و به همین دلیل، اسپکترومتر الکترونی بعنوان تکنیکی برای آنالیزهای شیمیایی سطحی در نظر گرفته می شود.
