برای آشنایی با تاریخچه ابزار دستی پیچ گوشتی باید به سراغ عامل اصلی اختراع آنها برویم، که البته پیچ ها هستند. پیچ های اولیه از چوب ساخته شده بودند
طراحی های اولیه با پیچ ارشمیدس آغاز شد، زمانی که او آن را به عنوان وسیله ای برای بیرون کشیدن آب از انبار کشتی ها ابداع کرد که روشی برای کشیدن آب به صورت عمودی – یا تقریباً عمودی – با استفاده از یک پیچ چوبی بزرگ، معکوس کردن آن و بیرون کشیدن آب از انبارها بود.
کاربرد اولین پیچ های چوبی
در تکامل بعدی، پیچ ها در ماشین های پرس روغن زیتون و حتی برای پرس کردن لباس‌ها استفاده می شدند. با این حال، پیچ ها به عنوان اتصال دهنده ای که امروزه از آنها استفاده می کنیم، نبودند.

در سال 1760، دو برادر انگلیسی، جاب و ویلیام وایات (Job and William Wyatt)، یک ماشین پیچ را به ثبت رساندند که از یک سوهان برای برش رزوه ها استفاده می کرد. این امکان تولید انبوه پیچ ها را فراهم کرد و پیش درآمدی برای ماشین های تولید انبوه صنعتی بود.

P.L. رابرتسون (1879-1951) اولین و بزرگ ترین تغییرات مدرن را در سال 1908 اختراع کرد، پیچ گوشتی مربعی و شرکت فورد موتور، یکی از اولین مشتریان رابرتسون، در اوایل قرن بیستم از بیش از هفتصد پیچ رابرتسون در خودروی مدل T خود استفاده کرد.

پیچ گوشتی نوع دسته T
این وسیله در مدل های معمولی و جغجغه ای ساخته می شود. در مدل جغجغه ای، امکان چرخش پیچ فقط در یک جهت میسر است. یعنی پیچ گوشتی با چرخیدن در یک جهت مشخص، پیچ را سفت یا شل می کند ولی چرخاندن در جهت مقابل هیچ تأثیری نخواهد داشت.

این پیچ گوشتی ها دارای نوک های ظریف و در اشکال مختلف هستند و برای کارهای متعدد و ظریف مانند تعمیر لوازم الکترونیکی یا تنظیم عینک بسیار مناسب و ایده آل هستند.
این انواع، معمولاً از یک دسته و یک شفت بدون سری ساخته شده اند و سرهای مختلف درون محفظه آن قرار می گیرد تا عملاً با داشتن یک پیچ گوشتی، همزمان بتوان انواع مختلفی از پیچ ها را باز و بسته کرد.
